Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Awards Little Sisters of the Poor $100,000 Grant

December 10, 2007
Contact: Sister Mary Vincent, Administrator (412) 307-1100

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield recently awarded the Little Sisters of the Poor a grant of $100,000 for the “Enhancing the Quality of Life for Seniors” program.

“Enhancing the Quality of Life for Seniors” program focuses on ensuring the daily health and well being of 50 Residents in the Sisters’ care. This program targets three significant areas: (1) Nutrition - the Sisters concentrate on key nutrition services including meals, diet assessment and education that help older adults achieve and maintain optimal nutrition; (2) Personal Emergency Response System - the Little Sisters, eager to assist Residents in the event of a fall or other life threatening emergency, provide a personal emergency response system in each Resident’s apartment; and (3) In-Home Wellness Clinic - with the health of apartment Residents in mind, the Sisters have created an in-Home wellness clinic. Each month a registered nurse visits the Home to provide health screenings to apartment Residents.

“Highmark is proud tp provide support to the Little Sisters’ health and well being program, which aligns with our priorities of health promotion, prevention of illness and disease, and providing essentials for those most in need,” said Mary Anne Papale, Highmark director of Community Affairs.

By enhancing the lives of the elderly poor at the Home, the Little Sisters wish work diligently to mitigate the negative affects of the aging process and assist Residents in maintaining healthier, active lifestyles.

“God has given the Little Sisters of the Poor great joy by allowing us to care for the elderly poor for so many years. We are truly humbled to receive this grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield which allows us to continue our mission in Pittsburgh,” said Sister Mary Vincent, Administrator.

In 2006, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield provided financial support of $242.9 million for programs in support of its corporate mission to provide access to affordable, quality health care enabling individuals to live longer, healthier lives.
