The public is invited to join the Little Sisters of the Poor as they celebrate the canonization of their foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 North Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
Bishop David A. Zubik, the principal Celebrant, will be joined by other bishops and clergy for this special Mass of thanksgiving. Immediately following the Mass, the Knights of Malta will host a reception in the Cathedral Hall.
On October 11, 2009, Jeanne Jugan was canonized in Rome by Pope Benedict XVI. One small act of kindness has grown into a congregation known throughout the world, and now that congregation will have a saint for the elderly. Today, over 2,700 Little Sisters of the Poor care for more than13,000 needy elderly persons in 202 family-like homes around the world.
Jeanne Jugans outstretched hand to Ann Chauvion, a poor, old, abandoned woman in France, was the Little Sisters of the Poors unselfish beginning. This act of kindness began a mission which serves the elderly in the likeness of Jesus Christ. A mission built upon the foundation of love, respect and dignity for the individual up to their death. Today, as back in 1839, Jeanne Jugan always believed We are only the instruments of his work..
