Gloria Chapel

The newly renovated Gloria Chapel at the Little Sisters of the Poor Pittsburgh Home.

The Little Sisters Benton Avenue Home and Chapel were originally built in 1923 through the generosity of benefactors, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Wall. The Walls donated a large piece of land to the Sisters in order to build a new Home for the elderly poor, as a memorial to their only child, James P. Wall.

The newly renovated Gloria Chapel was recently honored by The Historic Review Commission of Pittsburgh at their 23rd Annual Preservation Awards Presentation as one of the Outstanding Preservation Projects of 2006.

The Home’s renovated Chapel was completed in June 2005. The architectural firm for the project was Perfido Weiskopf, and the general contractor was the Massaro Company. The beautiful stained glass windows were designed by Nicholas Parrendo of Hunt Stained Glass Studio.

“The Little Sisters are humbled and honored by this award,” said Sister Mary Vincent, Administrator of the Home. “The Chapel has always been the heart of our Home and a special place for the Residents, as well as anyone who visits our Home, to pray,” said Sister Mary Vincent.

Epiphany-Adoration of the Magi Window The Magi, in wonderment, follow the new star, a sign to them of a new-born King, and offer their gifts: Sing to God all the earth, serve the Lord with gladness. (Psalm 11:2) Their visit prompts King Herod to seek the death of this new-born Child. The Holy Family flees but many infants are slaughtered - the first Christian martyrs (the palm representing their martyrdom and the daisies their innocence).
